Winter Lawn Tips
October 28, 2013
Want your lawn to be the envy of the neighborhood even in winter?? Read on to find out how to deal with lawn problems and maintenance tips during the winter months… Clean it up. It is extremely important not to leave debris, leaves, or toys out on the lawn. These things can smother the grass, create disease conditions, and invite insects, mice and other damaging pests. Adjust the cutting height on your mower to cut the grass higher as it will be growing more slowly now. You can cut less frequently throughout fall and winter. Instead of mowing, you'll be raking away fallen leaves and other debris. Remember that yard waste collection ends on your regularly scheduled trash pickup day through November 23. If you want to feed it before winter, make sure you use a fall specific lawn feed. Don't feed the lawn over the winter, as this will encourage early growth that wouldn't withstand winter weather until the spring sunshine returns. Lower the height of your mower by a notch or two (.5" - 1.0") the last couple of times you mow. Excessively long grass can smother itself, cause disease, and is at risk of damage from freezing and thawing conditions. However, do not cut the grass too short and scalp it thus exposing the crown of the plant to extreme conditions. Be aware of traffic. Under snow cover, or exposed to the elements, dormant grass will tolerate a moderate amount of traffic but a heavily worn path will be slower to green up in the spring and cause compaction. If you are one of those people who hates seeing the dead, brown grass in the fall and winter season, you may want to consider mixing up your grass a little because it is possible to have a green lawn year round. Cooler Season Grasses:
