Easy ideas for Harvest and Halloween Decorating

This is the year that you have finally decided to decorate your home for the fall holidays. Harvest and Halloween are the perfect celebrations to conjure up your decorating skills! After all who doesn't like cute pumpkin patches or a cornucopia of creepy crawly things? There is also the advantage of less house work... What other holiday encourages cobwebs, dusty rooms and unkempt lawns but for Halloween? If you are really crafty you can make your own decorations, if that is not your style, hobby stores are already stocked with pumpkins, goblins and much more. Still not sure where to look for inspiration? Hollywood's old horror movies can provide you with some great ideas; take a look at "The Bride of Frankenstein" if a more kid friendly décor is suited to your needs take a cue from "Casper the Friendly Ghost." Here are just a few of our favorite quick and easy ideas to "spruce up your home for Harvest and Halloween..."Pumpkin and Gourd Arrangement - A simple assortment of pumpkins in different sizes and shapes along with a variety of gourds is a great way to sport fall decor around the outside of your home. Try layering and staggering different ones along your front porch step. Dried Cornstalk Arrangement - Take about 15 to 20 dried cornstalks and bunch them together with bailer's twine to secure. A couple of stacks of straw or hay can sit down in front and add additional appeal. Maybe a jack-o'-lantern or pot of mums can rest on top of the stacks to add more style.Jack of Lanterns - Buy reusable jack of lanterns from the hobby store. Use stencils to create your own design, add an electric candle and use them to light up your sidewalks and at the front door. Pumpkin Planter - Pumpkins in various colors and sizes make a beautiful fall decoration when piled in a planter and placed on your porch.Gourd Candleholders - Gourds easily transform into candleholders by simply cutting off the tops and hollowing out the centers. Cemetery - You can find tombstones at most craft stores, or make your own by cutting out different tombstone shapes from cardboard. Paint the tombstones grey and black, you can write or stencil on R.I.P., then add some artificial moss for that final graveyard touch. Lighting - Dim the lights for that eerie setting. Really get in the mood by making eye ball string lights, using a string of Christmas lights add ping pong balls for the eyes, coloring with a marker for the eye itself. Add a black strobe light to enhance that creepy feeling to your cemetery.
Sound Effects - Use a portable radio or speakers inside and out. There are CD's and tapes on the market with thunder claps, screams, creaking sounds and moans. Spider Webs - You can make your own webs with cotton batting found at craft stores, or buy them at the local discount chain store. Drape them over furniture inside or on your plants and bushes outside. Add fake spiders for that authentic touch.
Black silhouettes - Make black cats, witches or bat silhouettes out of construction paper to hide in the corners of your windows. Up light with a flash light for a truly scary effect. Furniture Coverings - Cover your furniture with white sheets to emulate a haunted house. Add baby powder for the dust. Hanging Ghosts - Using an old beach ball, hang a sheet over it, running a line of twine through a hole in the center of the sheet. Next gather the material under the ball to form the ghost head. Using the same steps you can arms using balloons. Finally use a black marker to add eyes and mouth. Fog - You can create fog by either using dry ice or by using a fog machine for that other worldly feeling. Pumpkin Man - To create a pumpkin man use an old pair of jeans and shirt, stuff with newspaper or leaves to create the body. Insert a stick or broom handle into the body. You will attach the pumpkin to this stick creating the head of pumpkin man. Finish off with some fake blood for that ghoulish touch.
