Decorate Your Home Like a Professional… 7 Easy Steps to Make Your Home Look Like A MODEL!
July 29, 2013
Over the years, Sunrise Homes has created dozens of beautiful model homes designed not only to demonstrate our numerous floors plans but also to inspire future owners. With the help of the following tips that we've picked up along the way from our skilled interior designers, anyone can create a home with that "model home" feel for their everyday life. 1. It doesn't have to match! Not only is it okay to mix and match both styles of furniture and wood finishes, doing so adds visual interest to rooms. Try pairing different color nightstands in bedrooms or maybe even painted chairs with a wood finish breakfast table. Mixing woods and finishes, avoids that "off the showroom floor" look and makes a room look more sophisticated and interesting. 2. Search for one of a kind pieces in unique locations. We receive so many inquiries from visitors of our model homes as to where certain accessories such as lamps, china, figurines, etc. can be purchased. Unfortunately, many of these are one-of-a-kind treasures, because prior to each model home installation project, our designers actually visit flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores for unique artwork, accessories and even furniture. In many of our model homes, we've had entire china cabinets filled with dishes and accessories purchased entirely from yard sales. We've also had many custom lamps made from figurines purchased from local antique and thrift stores. With a little creativity and a willingness to "dig" you can create your own unique gems. 3. Windows matter. One of our favorite design tricks is to layer window coverings. Adding a roll-up rice paper or bamboo stick shade under a pair of curtains is an inexpensive and easy way to add texture and visual interest to your room. Also when hanging curtains, hanging them a foot or so higher than the actual top of the window brings the eye upward, creating the impression of even higher ceilings. 4. Accessorize smart. Any smart designer will tell you, the details matter! Carefully chosen accessories add the finishing touches to your room and matter more than you may realize. The key is to group accessories in "odd" numbers such as three or five. Make sure to select accessories of varying heights and widths and stager them from left to right in a random triangle type shape. Staging accessories in this manner creates small vignettes and areas of interest for the eye that help to draw people into the room. 5. Play with placement of furniture, artwork and accessories.
While our designers typically arrive with a furniture placement plan, they rarely leave with the furniture and accessories placed exactly as planned. They move things around and try different locations to see what looks best, before determining the final placement. Experiment with floating furniture instead of lining it against the walls. This often helps to make rooms more inviting and helps to create differentiation of spaces within today's open floor plans. 6. Layers, layers, layers. Create that warm and cozy feeling in rooms by layering textures and colors. Rugs, throws and pillows are great ways to make your room your own and, no, they don't have to match! Pops of color also create a layering effect and enhance the visual interest key to an inviting room. 7. Good night! Over the years, one of the things we've been most impressed with is the knack the designers have for creating a luxurious bed. Again, the key here is layering. Using different textures for your sheets, blankets, duvets, etc. creates a sense of luxury that anyone would love to crawl into at the end of the day. Experiment with different methods of "making" the bed, however be sure to let the different layers show. A casually placed throw at the foot of the bed is another way to create the look of casual comfort.
