The New Normal: Working from Home
There is no getting around it: things have changed and normal takes on a whole new meaning. And while mostly likely, “normal” will continue to change and look different as time goes on, one of the realities of this newly defined normal is working from home. Even as many places open back up and companies try to return to business as usual, for a large part of the workforce, working from home is standard operating procedure for the foreseeable future. And as such it is important to design a place where homeowners can comfortably and effectively work from home.
To that end, the following are some of the best practices to keep in mind when designing for the new normal: working from home.
Promote Privacy
Ideally any home office would include a door for a myriad of obvious reasons. However, we realize not all working from home spaces are actual rooms. So, if the space cannot be separate and include a door, be sure to set off a work area from the rest of the house. A nook off the living room or even off the kitchen, can work well with the right merchandising. And speaking of merchandising, if there truly is not a separate space for a home office, a piece of furniture strategically placed can do the trick. It may not be sound-proof, but it can help separate the space mentally.
Celebrate Natural Light
Emphasizing natural light throughout a home is essential. And, the home office, especially so. Extensive amounts of screen time combined with poor lighting can lead to headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, and fatigue. Further, good lighting has been shown to increase productivity. Just as natural light can help lead to better sleep at night, it can also help keep you awake during the day. And if fewer headaches, better sleep, and increased productivity were not enough, natural light also improves mood. And who doesn’t want their home to put them in a good mood?
Furnish Strategically
Where you place furniture is almost as important as the furnishings themselves. For example, it is key to position the desk and chair in such a way as to be welcoming and visually inviting. There should also be enough spacing, so the office (irrespective of actual square footage) does not feel crowded. And when in doubt, add light (natural or otherwise), and interesting art.
