Has Your Elf Arrived?

December 2, 2017

Happy 12th Birthday to the Elf on the Shelf! The Elf on The Shelf: A Christmas Tradition, written by Carol Aebersold and her daughter, Chanda Bell, was released in 2005. The simple premise is that a little scout elf is sent from the North Pole to watch over children and then return to Santa at night to report on the children’s behavior. The elf then returns to the house in a new position each day. It has become a delightful hide-and-seek game for families. These elves receive their Christmas magic enabling them to fly back and forth to the North Pole after being named and loved by a child. Over the years, the elves have created some mischief and mayhem due to creative parents!  What have you named your elf? The top three names for these scout elves are: Buddy, Snowflake, and Elfie. Remember, besides being well-behaved, the elf is NOT to be touched! If he or she does get touched accidentally, there are three things you can do:

  1. Write a note to the elf and/or Santa apologizing
  2. Sprinkle some cinnamon next to your elf, it will act as vitamins until he/she sees his doctor at the North Pole
  3. Sing Christmas carols with your family.

It's not difficult to see how these elves have won our hearts during the holiday season by adding a little holiday fun to our daily lives! Parents have become creative with keeping the magic alive and love the joyful feeling they get from seeing their children’s excitement when they find their elf. Most families start their “elfing” on December 1st  with their elf announcing his or her return.  With over 850 thousand fans on Facebook, 640 thousand Twitter followers and 150 thousand Instagram followers, and a few movies made, The Elf on the Shelf has quickly become an American Christmas tradition. It is fun to create daily scenarios on your own, but you can easily Google or find thousands of ideas on Pinterest. What creative scenarios have you used in the past or are going to use this year?
